Authorities have identified the man who died free-diving in the Gulf as 19-year-old Tyler B. Pillion of Madeira Beach.
Pillion was free diving, meaning he was diving without a tank and relying on taking long, deep breaths, said Elizabeth Watts, Clearwater's public safety spokeswoman. Pillion was spearfishing early this afternoon about 8 miles from Clearwater with a group of friends, some of whom were using scuba tanks, some of whom were free-diving.
Something went wrong and Pillion "went into distress,'' Watts said. His friends brought him to the surface and put him on the boat. Someone on the boat contacted the U.S. Coast Guard and the diver was given CPR while the Coast Guard escorted the boat to shore, Watts said.
The teen was taken to Morton Plant Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The death appears to be accidental, Watts said.
