It was like watching the fashion show BEFORE the fashion shows.
Fashionistas sashaying around in sequined cocktail mini dresses, distressed lace and leather, maxi dresses, rocker boy threads and lots of "Mad Men" style.
The event was the official (and private) kick-off party for Tampa Bay Fashion Week at the Sheraton Tampa Riverwalk.
Attendees were buzzing, of course, about the second annual event – and it's no understatement to say everyone is pumped.
"We're a part of fashion history in Tampa," said vivacious designer Ivanka Ska. "This is a cool way to get excited for the week and show our support for the fashion community. Five years from now when someone asks, 'What's Tampa Bay Fashion Week?' I'm just going to laugh."
Ska, who was wearing her own tribal design mini dress paying tribute to Africa, will show her line of elegant dresses, blouses and skirts with sleek cuts, feminine lines and "lots of surprises" tonight at 7.
Designer Ben Chmura finished his spring 2010 collection Wednesday night. The line he calls "Celtic Warrior meets Rocker Chic" includes lots of leather, satin, spike and stud accessories and leggings.
"The audience is going to be in for a treat," Chmura said. "I'm so glad there is a Tampa Bay Fashion Week. I'm really excited to be a part of it again this year. Anytime you believe in your art, you want it to be your best and you want to show it in your community."
Newcomer Troy Anthony, who began his design career selling T-shirts out of his car trunk, couldn't contain his excitement about his first-time show.
"(My line) is wearable couture. It's high fashion. It's wearable art. I didn't want it to be a standard line," said Anthony, who will showcase his collection today. "People are starting to realize Tampa is a fashionable town; I'm so happy to be a part of it."
Tampa Bay Fashion Week continues through Saturday at the Sheraton Tampa Riverwalk.
