A 29-year-old man died early this morning when his car rear-ended a tanker carrying a cargo of orange juice as the truck slowed to make a turn near Lake Wales.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office said Joseph Cherry, of Lake Wales, was killed about 2:30 a.m. today on State Road 17.
Cherry was heading south behind the tractor-trailer driven by Gary Schiering of Lake Wales, 66, when the truck driver slowed to turn right onto Mountain Lake Cutoff Road.
Cherry's 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis hit the rear of the tanker and he died at the scene, the sheriff's office said. The report said it appears he was not wearing a seat belt.
The road was closed until about 7 a.m. as deputies investigated the crash.
