PORT RICHEY - Boaters and others who like to do their weekend resting and recreating along the eastern bank of Miller's Bayou be advised, city-owned Nicks Park is temporarily closed for a scheduled repair job.
The park's sea wall is being replaced, said Pat Stewart, the city's utilities and public works manager. The job is expected to be finished by Sept. 30.
The sea wall installation is part of an overall upgrade to the park's amenities, through Florida Department of Environmental Protection's Florida Recreational Development Assistance Program grant. Similar grants were used last year to refurbish Oelsner Park, at the north end of the bayou, and for improvements that are under way at Wilmslow Park.
Other improvements at Nicks Park will continue after the park is reopened. Those improvements, Stewart said, include repairing the picnic pavilion roof and renovating the restrooms and dock area.
Nicks Park is named for H. R. Nicks, who donated the land at 7929 Bayview St. in 1928 to be used as a public park. A building that stood at the park once served as Port Richey's City Hall.
Today, it has the distinction of being the place for locals to launch to the Pithlachascotee River and points beyond.
