CLEARWATER - The case cries out for undercover work.
Police are investigating an unusual rash of beach blanket thefts – 17 since Sept. 3 – and have arrested one suspect.
In addition to the blankets, victims are losing other items to the thieves, including wallets, cameras, phones, iPods and car keys.
"This is unusual this time of year, especially with the decrease in pedestrian and vehicular traffic," said police Lt. Joe Young, who oversees the Clearwater Beach district.
In at least three of the cases, the suspect stole the victims' car keys from the beach and stole items from their vehicles.
On Wednesday, detectives arrested John Keegan, 42. He is accused of stealing and using credit cards obtained from vehicles and, in one case, of taking a victim's vehicle.
Police do not believe Keegan is responsible for all the thefts.
Beachgoers are reminded not to leave their personal belongings unattended.
