The recession has put the squeeze on Tampa Bay area residents, as can be seen in figures released this week by the U.S. Census Bureau. The results are based on the annual American Community Survey, conducted nationwide.
The figures show that local residents reported less income in 2008 compared with the year before. More were divorced. In several cases, people commuting to work were more likely to hitch rides with friends and co-workers than in 2007 - a change that probably reflects the unprecedented spike in gasoline prices in 2008. Nearly one-fifth of the region's residents were without health insurance in 2008.
