ST. PETERSBURG - More than 200 volunteers removed 880 pounds of trash and debris from the Fort De Soto county park near Tierra Verde last week.
The Sept. 19 effort was part of the 24th annual International Coastal Cleanup, sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy. Tampa Bay Watch took the local lead, signing up volunteers for the global initiative.
Aquarius Spring, a Coca-Cola unit, recognized Tampa Bay Watch with a $50,000 grant to support its clean water initiatives, said Coke representative Jodi Petrich.
The partnership and grant were celebrated by staff and volunteers during a luncheon, with volunteers joined by Pinellas County Commissioner Susan Latvala, St. Petersburg City Councilman Jim Kennedy and state Rep. Bill Heller, a Democrat from St. Petersburg.
In addition to the beach area, the park has a boat launch with floating docks and a camping area.
