TAMPA - Last year, Berkeley Prep middle hitter Lindsay Young was named tournament MVP of the Berkeley Premier. Although the award was significant, it didn't satisfy Young. Her team finished runner-up to three-time defending champion and nationally ranked Louisville Mercy Academy.
"Winning awards isn't important to me," Young said. "I want to win. I work to win."
So when Young picked up MVP honors again Saturday, the end result made the award much more special.
Young had 11 kills while sophomore outside hitter Jordan Burgess led the team with 16 kills as Berkeley Prep defeated Mercy Academy in the championship match, 25-19, 25-20, 23-25, 25-21.
Berkeley Prep head coach Randy Dagostino said it was the team's second title during the 17-year history of the event.
"Being a senior, getting MVP and beating Mercy, this is a memorable day," Young said.
Berkeley Prep sophomore Mackenzie Dagostino finished with 33 assists and 22 digs while senior outside hitter Chelsea Parker had 37 digs and 14 service points. Junior defensive specialist Natasha Rowland had 31 digs.
"You have to hand it to them, they outplayed us," said Mercy Academy coach Todd Garvey.
Young, Burgess, Dagostino and Tampa Prep senior setter Carolina Dillabough were selected to the all-tournament team.
