PLANT CITY - Durant, adorned in special green and gold uniforms for homecoming, put on a show Friday night by blanking rival Bloomingdale in a Class 5A-District 6 game.
The Cougars (3-1, 1-0) constantly swarmed the Bulls offense, allowing only 3 rushing yards during the first half and giving up only one big play the entire game - a 63-yard bomb from Bloomingdale QB Eugene Perry to receiver Andre Ragland. A fumble a few plays later ended the scoring threat.
"Our defense has done a great job all year, and I'm proud of them to get the shutout," Cougars coach Mike Gottman said. "There's always room for improvement, but I'll take a district win any day of the week."
Although Durant managed to score only once in the first half, the Cougars were able to eat up huge amounts of time with their powerful rushing attack led by QB Je'Twan Smith and running backs John Hicks and Antonio Morris.
Smith ended the night with 12 carries for 56 yards while completing five of nine for 57 passing yards. Hicks had 16 carries for 108 yards and two scores, while Morris finished with 18 rushes for 71 yards.
Bloomingdale dropped to 0-4 and 0-1.
