TAMPA - A sudden rain shower contributed to a pileup that involved dozens of vehicles on the Howard Frankland Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
The Florida Highway Patrol worked 19 crashes involving 64 vehicles traveling in the southbound lanes of Interstate 275.
The crashes extended between a half-mile and a mile, said Sgt. Larry Kraus, a highway patrol spokesman.
"One accident happened and then a bunch after that," Kraus said.
That 4:53 p.m. crash occurred on the Tampa side of the bridge. The highway patrol closed two lanes and kept one open. All lanes were opened at 9 p.m., Kraus said.
Four people were taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, Kraus said.
