Our country did well for many years with the Ten Commandments, Constitution and Declaration of Independence - all easy to read and to the point.
Then, as our governments evolved, the makeup of the state and federal legislatures gradually became less bodies of regular folks trying to serve the needs of their constituents, to mostly lawyers.
My father used to say that our government has become nothing more than a bunch of lawyers writing laws to make work for more lawyers.
"Read this?" (Other Views, Sept. 25) proves his point. Why in the world does it take 1,427 pages to write a bill?
I submit that as more lawyers became involved in the legislative process, we lost the concept of "right" and "wrong" and replaced it with "legal" and "illegal."
The Miranda question going before the U. S. Supreme Court and the over 600 amendments attached to the health care bill to date also support my dad's assertion.
I mean, how difficult is it to understand "Thou shall not kill?"
Term limits would be a good start.
