TAMPA - If you dig fireboats, you'll love Tampa Fire Rescue's newest piece of floating fire equipment. The 69-foot, 52-ton Patriot cruised beneath the Sunshine Skyway about noon Monday en route to its new home on Davis Islands.
The $3.8 million vessel is the culmination of more than three years of planning and construction, Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Bill Wade said.
It was designed with the protection of Tampa Bay area boaters in mind, and it will respond to emergencies from the Port of Tampa to Port Manatee via the Tampa Bay shipping channel and past Egmont Key.
The fireboat was built in Kingston, Ontario, and was paid for with a grant from the Department of Homeland Security.
Before the vessel goes into service, crews will spend several weeks training, Wade said.
