PricewaterhousCoopers laying off hundreds in Tampa

TAMPA - Consulting giant PricewaterhouseCoopers will lay off approximately 500 high-end information technology professionals, the bulk from the company's offices in Tampa. This comes on the heels of other cutbacks at PWC offices across Florida.

This round of cuts come from PWC's own information technology support group, which numbers about 1,100 nationwide, said PWC spokesman Jonathan Stoner. "The majority of those cuts will come from the Tampa office," Stoner said.

Workers at PWC were notified Thursday afternoon.

PWC officials say they hope to outsource much of their IT support work to another firm, Tata Consultancy Services of India. That company has already taken over similar work from the Oldsmar-based ratings company Nielsen, which has outsourced many of their IT employees.

Employees laid off from PWC would have to re-apply for positions at Tata, though it is unclear where Tata would employ any workers. Tata officials were not yet available for comment.

Tata Consultancy Services is also the company which received the work done by 170 tech support and software employees of Nielsen Media Research who were let go in June of 2008.

PWC had already been planning cutbacks in Florida. PWC closed its tax practice office in Orlando this year, citing a decline in tax business in Florida.
