Garciaparra signs, then retires as a member of Red Sox

FORT MYERS - Big news here at City of Palms Park this morning.

The Boston Red Sox signed former Red Sox all-star Nomar Garciaparra to a minor league contract Wednesday morning, then Garciaparra announced his retirement after 14 seasons in the major leagues.

"I had this recurring dream to retire as a Red Sox," Garciaparra said. "To have that dream come true I can't put into words."

It's a bit quieter on the Tampa Bay Rays side of the stadium unless you consider Ben Zobrist's spring training debut in right field, Sean Rodriguez being paired with Jason Bartlett as the double-play combination for the first time this spring and Reid Brignac getting a look at third base as big news.

Didn't think so.

Well, not as big as Nomar's big day.

The Rays try to make seven straight against their AL East rivals.

Here is the Rays lineup:

Jason Bartlett SS
Gabe Kapler LF
Ben Zobrist RF
Pat Burrell DH
B.J. Upton CF
Sean Rodriguez 2B
Kelly Shoppach C
Ryan Shealy 1B
Reid Brignac 3B
David Price P
