Dodgers send Gagne to minors

GLENDALE, Ariz. - The Los Angeles Dodgers sent former Cy Young Award winner Eric Gagne to their minor-league camp, stalling the closer's bid to make it back to the majors.

The 34-year-old Gagne had a 20.25 ERA in three outings during spring training, allowing six runs and eight hits in 22/3 innings.

The Dodgers reassigned Gagne to the minors Monday, and Manager Joe Torre says the reliever accepted the move.

Gagne was a dominant closer for the Dodgers and won the Cy Young in 2003. That came during a stretch in which he successfully converted 84 straight save chances.

Gagne signed a minor-league contract with the Dodgers. He spent last year in the minors, pitching in the independent Can-Am League. He played for Milwaukee in 2008.

ATHLETICS: Ben Sheets was battered for 10 runs without retiring a batter as Cincinnati beat Oakland 13-5. He gave up eight hits and a walk, and another batter reached on an error.

CUBS: The Cubs showed up for their exhibition game against Colorado in Tucson, Ariz., about an hour later than expected after their bus broke down on the highway because of engine trouble.

The Cubs chose to skip batting practice when they got to Hi Corbett Field in Tucson on Monday. They decided to just stretch instead.

DIAMONDBACKS: Third baseman Mark Reynolds says he's agreed to terms on a new contract. The AP reports the deal is worth $14.5 million over three years and includes an $11 million club option for 2013.

MARINERS: Ace Cliff Lee was ejected from a spring training game against Arizona for throwing at Diamondbacks catcher Chris Snyder.

With two outs in the bottom of the third inning Monday, Lee threw an inside pitch to Snyder, then tossed one just over the batter's head.

Snyder walked toward the mound and the dugouts and bullpens emptied, but no punches were thrown.

In the first, Lee tripped over Snyder while trying to back up a play at home plate. The lefty was tagged for four runs and six hits.
