TAMPA - Chamberlain gave Sickles too many chances, and the Gryphons capitalized by scoring five runs in the seventh inning and holding on for a 10-8 Class 5A-District 9 victory Wednesday.
The Gryphons got five hits during the final-inning rally, including run-scoring singles from Jack Machonis and Mike De Meza and an RBI double from Tripp Merrell.
Sickles (7-3) started quickly, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning when Chase Wilcocks stole second, drawing a throw from the Chiefs catcher and allowing Anthony Rosello to score from third. A Mike Sciortino single drove in Wilcocks.
The Chiefs answered quickly, scoring four in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a run-scoring double by Brett Gordon.
Both teams hit well, but errors were costly for both sides. The Gryphons reclaimed the lead in the third on a three-run triple by Sam Machonis after the Chiefs couldn't come up with a foul ball between home and third to give Machonis another chance.
Chamberlain staged a rally of its own to take the lead back in the fourth, scoring on a single by Gordon and on an error.
After the Gryphons' five-run seventh, Chamberlain added two runs but couldn't get closer.
