»  Comments | Post a Comment

The 11th annual Sarasota Film Festival opened Friday with a screening of Oren Moverman's "The Messenger" and the traditional opening night gala. Here are some highlights of today's schedule.

DON'T FORGET: Writer-historian Shawn C. Bean discusses how humble cow-town Jacksonville, not glitzy Hollywood, Calif., was America's first filmmaking capitol during the early 20th Century at the "Florida - The First Hollywood" panel discussion at 11 a.m. at Esca, 1888 Main St., Sarasota.

DON'T MISS: The screening of "Umbrellas," featuring Christo and Jeane-Claude's environmental project of 3,100 umbrellas. 11 a.m. at Hollywood 20. Also, the festival's homage to director Hal Ashby begins with a 2 p.m. screening of the cult classic "Harold and Maude" at the Hollywood 20.

FUN STUFF: It's all about the kids at youthFEST, which kicks things off with Shorts 1: Against The Odds, screening "The Morse Collectors," "Alba (Dawn)," "Losing the Elephants," and "Light Feet: A Raramuri Tale." Recommended for ages 10 and older. 11 a.m. at the Hollywood 20. The program is followed at noon by a showing of "Egon and Donci," an animated Hungarian film about the friendship between Egon, an absent-minded amateur scientist, and Donci, his meddling feline friend.
