If Peelander-Z were any more of a cartoon it would actually be two-dimensional.
This isn't a put-down. The trio bills itself as "the Japanese Action Comic Punk Band" on its website. It claims the brightly colored outfits it wears onstage are their actual skin.
Furthermore, the three members, Peelander-Red, Peelander-Yellow and Peelander-Green (who replaced Peelander-Blue), don't really hail from Japan (despite their Japanese accents) or New York (despite their being based there since 1998), but from the planet Peelander. The Z area, specifically.
There's not likely to be a homecoming tour anytime soon, though.
"It's kind of hard to go back there," says Peelander-Red by telephone.
Finding an opening act could be tough too, as Peelander-Red insists Peelander-Z is the planet's only band.
Besides, Peelander-Z seems to be having a great time on Earth.
The band's shows don't so much encourage audience participation as make it impossible to avoid.
"We're not just a regular band that plays music," Peelander-Red says. "We're very exciting. We're more like a party."
Shows can include but are not limited to human bowling, limbo contests and karaoke.
"There's a lot of call and response," Peelander-Red says. "We bring the audience on stage and they play our equipment."
Fans are encouraged to wear their own Peelander costumes. You can be Peelander-Purple or Peelander-Gold.
"Or it doesn't have to be a color," Peelander-Red says. "You can be Peelander-Bicycle. I like mixing stuff together.
"We'd like the audience to come and play with us," he continues. "Wear funny costumes or bring a cowbell or frying pan. We have a song called 'Taco Taco Taco' so you could bring a taco."
