Miley Cyrus sheds Hannah Montana on this tour

Two years ago, Miley Cyrus shared headliner billing with her television alter ego, "Hannah Montana," on a tour billed as "The Best of Both Worlds."

Although she's still starring in the Disney Channel series, Cyrus has left the fictional character behind for her current tour, which nevertheless drew a sell-out crowd of 15,087 to the St. Pete Times Forum on Tuesday night.

Cyrus' partial emancipation means she's free to ape more adult styles such as dance-pop ("Party in the USA"), Faith Hill-style country ballads ("The Climb") and aggro-pop ("7 Things").

All were performed Tuesday during a 90-minute set that was heavy on special effects - Cyrus flew over the crowd at one point - choreography and costume changes.

Cyrus writhed and shook her hair on the fast songs and looked pensive on the ballads. She began one number at the piano, which miraculously continued playing after she left the bench.

The smoke, the fireworks, the video - any concertgoer older than 20 would have seen it all before. But to Cyrus' preteen target audience, it looks like the real thing. And considering how rigidly staged most rock shows now are, maybe it is.

Metro Station, featuring Cyrus' older brother Trace, opened the show. Cyrus and co-frontman Mason Musso (whose brother Mitchel also is on "Hannah Montana") seemed to spend as much time exhorting the crowd as playing. Cyrus seemed more adept at slinging his guitar around his neck than actually playing it, but at least they were singing live, as several flat notes proved.

The tour's ticketless entry went off with only a few hitches, such as forgotten credit cards and the like.
