WFLA Will Wait Until June To Shut Down Analog TV Signal

»  Comments | Post a Comment

WFLA, Channel 8, the NBC affiliate in the Tampa Bay area, will hold off unplugging its analog television signal until June 12, the new date envisioned for the nation's switch to digital TV.

That means the station will send analog and digital TV signals until June, joining WTVT, Channel 13, in making similar plans.

WFLA sends its traditional analog TV broadcasts on Channel 8 and two digital channels: a digital version of its main signal and 8 Prime, which carries reruns of classic shows.

Federal rules allow stations to unplug analog signals between February and June as long as they follow certain procedures.

Other stations hope to unplug their analog broadcasts around the original changeover date, Feb. 17, in part to conserve cash. Broadcasting two feeds can cost tens of thousands of dollars a month in extra utility bills, station managers say.
