Super Bowl ads we won't see on TV

One way to cash in on the Super Bowl without having to spend a lot of cash is to have a commercial rejected.

Every year, there are commercials that don't make the cut because the host network and the NFL have the final say on taste, content and what might upset an audience geared up to laugh at beer commercials.

Super Bowl XLV, coming up Sunday night on Fox, sold out the commercial spots early with choice availability going for up to $3 million. Now we're waiting to see if the commercials measure up to our expectations.

Last year, there was a much-ado-about-nothing flap over a soft-sell anti-abortion commercial from religious-based Focus on the Family. It featured then University of Florida star quarterback Tim Tebow and his mother. CBS allowed it. It came and went without much reaction.

This year, there's a flap over Fox rejecting an Alabama religious group's commercial calling attention to the John: 3:16 verse from the Bible. The commercial shows football fans watching a televised game and wondering why a player has "John 3:16" painted under his eye. It prompts them to look up the verse. The action has riled up some religious groups.

Reportedly, Fox also turned down a commercial for a website that claims to hook up people looking for extramarital affairs. This outfit has been rejected before.

The offending commercial featured a porn star named Savanna Samson. One suspects the website owners know that this ad would never air and are counting on publicity to send people to the site.

Internet domain registrar GoDaddy is a master at bait and switch Super Bowl commercials.

The company buys the time and creates a too-racy for TV ad. Said ad gets edited for Super Bowl while GoDaddy touts the uncensored version online. This year, "Biggest Loser" trainer Jillian Michaels and race car driver Danica Patrick are involved. Do they disrobe? Maybe. Maybe not.

Another commercial doctored this year is from Toyota. According to The New York Times, the NFL didn't like an ad that had a mom worrying about her son getting head injuries while playing football (a sensitive subject in professional football).

KENNEDY REMEMBERED: In celebration of the 50th anniversary of John F. Kennedy's presidential inauguration, the TLC network has a two-hour special beginning at 9 p.m. Sunday.

"Kennedys' Home Movies" includes photographs, news footage and never-before-seen Kennedy family home movies. It's narrated by Stockard Channing and covers three generations beginning with JFK's father Joe Kennedy.
