PICTURES IN THE PARK
Two family-friendly films — that is, if your kids aren't afraid of flying monkeys and a man with six fingers — will get unique screenings in the next few weeks.
Sunset Cinema, the Tampa Theater's Traveling Picture Show, begins at 8 p.m. on Saturday at River Tower Park in Sulphur Springs with the screening of "The Princess Bride," the 1987 film directed by Rob Reiner. It stars Cary Elwes as a young pirate who must rescue his true love (Robin Wright) from the clutches of a manipulative prince (Chris Sarandon). The script by William Goldman (adapted from his own book) is a witty classic full of fun and adventure.
On May 17, "The Wizard of Oz" will screen at 8:15 p.m. in Cotanchobee Park on the Hillsborough River in downtown Tampa.
In both cases, the film will be projected onto a giant, inflatable screen. The screenings are free. People can bring blankets, pillows, backrests, low-profile beach chairs and picnic baskets. Alcoholic beverages, plastic tarps and tables are not permitted.
Tampa Theatre personnel will be on hand to sell popcorn, soft drinks, bottled water, candy, Tampa Theatre Frisbees and picnic blankets. All sales support the theater's artistic and educational programming.
Gates open for both screenings at 6 p.m. Those arriving early will be treated to pre-show entertainment of animated and live action shorts, selected from Tampa Theatre's Let's Make Movies Digital Filmmaking Summer Camp for young filmmakers. Others will come from The Tampa Film Review, a monthly showcase for independent, locally-produced short films.
Two more movies and locations for October and November will be announced later this year. The event is sponsored by Bank of America, The City of Tampa Parks and Recreation and the Tampa Tribune.
