Menopause is a condition all women will someday endure. And when they do, it is often accompanied by uncomfortable symptoms, including hot flashes, night sweats and weight gain.
In an effort to help make menopausal symptoms more bearable, Morton Plant Mease Women's Services and the national Red Hot Mamas group are kicking off a "Red Hot Mamas" awareness program with a free one-day workshop at Morton Plant Hospital. The event will be held at 9 a.m. June 18 in the hospital's Tuttle Auditorium, 300 Pinellas St. in Clearwater.
The term menopause is commonly used to describe any of the changes a woman experiences just before or after she stops her menstrual cycle, marking the end of her reproductive years. An estimated 6,500 women enter menopause each day in the United States.
"We hope with our local program we shatter the myth that menopause means the end of life is near," says Marcia Albanese, Morton Plant Mease director of women's and children's services. "The purpose of our program is to educate women on understanding menopause and empowering women to make better choices for their health, comfort and well-being."
The Red Hot Mamas workshop will focus on many menopausal issues, including treating symptoms, tackling midlife weight gain and understanding the mind and body approach to menopause. Guest speakers include gynecologist Stephanie Van Zandt, life coach Elizabeth Nelson and wellness educator Cathleen Shears. There will also be shopping, massages and refreshments.
The event is free, but pre-registration is required by calling (727) 953-6877, or going to www.mpmhealth.com/redhotmamas.
