Shine On, Shiny Kitchen
If you kept your house because you couldn't sell it, but traded in the kitchen to make yourself feel better, you may have slightly more high-maintenance surfaces. Keep them looking new with these tips from The Maids Home Services:

Granite countertops: Use a solution of water and a mild pH-balanced detergent to remove dirt and eliminate streaks. Avoid ammonia and abrasive cleansers.

Stainless steel: Use a solution of mild degreasing dishwashing liquid and hot water to wash surface. Rinse thoroughly, dry immediately, then apply stainless-steel polish, going with the grain.

Cabinets: Mix one part degreasing dishwashing liquid with two parts warm water and clean cabinet faces with a nonabrasive scrubbing pad. Wipe dry.

Time For A Ghost Hunt
Orchid lovers looking for a weekend getaway should check out the blooming ghost orchid at Audubon Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary near Naples.

But move quick. You've only got about two weeks.

The orchid has seven buds; three were expected to be open by the end of last week. Four have a little ways to go yet. The plant is about 45 feet up on a bald cypress about 150 feet from the sanctuary's boardwalk.

The rare ghost orchid, subject of the best seller "The Orchid Thief," by Susan Orlean, grows only in a small area of Southwest Florida.

Corkscrew sanctuary is on Immokalee Road off Interstate 75. Hours are 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. and admission is $10 for adults. Call (239) 348-9151 to get the latest bloom update.

Check www.paradisecoast.com/ghostorchid or call 1-800-688-3600 for hotel specials.

Meet Herb
Spice up your life this summer by growing herbs. You'll get info on the standards, and even more on unusual, fun plants at a free herb gardening class at 2 p.m. Wednesday, repeating at 6:30 p.m.

Both sessions will be held at Crystal Beach Community Hall, 517 Crystal Beach Ave. Space is limited; call (727) 582-2673.

Craft Lovers, Hit The Road
Get out of the sun and into The Lakeland Center for Buckler's 17th annual Art, Craft & Scrapbooking Fair, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

You'll find unusual stuff for the home, tasty stuff for the tummy and demonstrations so you can make your own stuff.

Admission is $5; free for ages 12 and younger. The center is at 701 W. Lime St. (Exit 31 from Interstate 4); (863) 834-8100.
