Dog owners are louder in pet poll. Surprised?

Dog lovers are more vocal about their passion for pooches than cat fanciers are about theirs.

Although cat owners outnumber dogs owners by nearly 13 million in the United States, dogs fetched 65 percent of the vote in a pet preference poll by the Cat Fanciers' Association and American Kennel Club.

For eight weeks, thousands of pet lovers voted to decide once and for all which Americans prefer, cats or dogs. And the claws came out. One cat lover wrote, "Cats don't hang all over you wanting attention ... they don't eat disgusting things and then try to lick your face," while a dog fan retorted, "Cats have to have do-over lives because they didn't figure out how to have fun the first time around."

Dogs led the pack by the widest margin in Chicago, Seattle and Detroit (69 percent each), while cat lovers put up the best performances in Baltimore (45 percent) and Philadelphia and Houston (41 percent each).

The poll included 14 metropolitan areas, none of them Tampa - in fact, none in Florida. So we'll do our own. E-mail me with your vote for dogs vs. cats and why at Kristen @fetchingcommunica tions.com. I'll post the results in a future column.

Meanwhile, here's a few of the things the 9,000 AKC/Cat Fanciers respondents said when they cast ballots.

•"Cats don't have to be walked, and they don't bark!"

•"Cats are much easier to live with - with much less work."

•"While I voted for cats, I really do love dogs, particularly my dog Salukis because he reminds me of cats of course."

•"Dogs walk around with a smile as man's best friend and are always there for us."

On another note, my family has a new pet! Care to guess whether it's a cat or dog? Read about him in next week's Petcetera.
