A little creativity, an old something bound for the trash heap and close attention to deadlines could win you cash next month. Not to mention a unique new treasure for your garden.
It's time to get to work on a project for the 2010 Recycled Yard Art competition sponsored by the Hillsborough Extension, the county and the county fair. First-place winners in each of four categories - elementary school, middle school, high school and post-high school - win $100.
Another $100 goes to the People's Choice award winner, determined by ballot-box voting at the Hillsborough County Fair Oct. 13 through 17.
The contest, in its third year, aims to encourage reusing or recycling items that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Contestants are asked to create art that can weather the elements. It should be constructed mostly with recycled - or recyclable - goods, and weigh no more than 40 pounds. Only Hillsborough residents are eligible to enter.
Last year's winners included Bob Dickey's prehistoric metal dragon sculpture built out of truck and railroad parts, shovels and chains. In 2008, Don Hardy won a first for his tiny ship made of blue glass cut from bottles.
In each of the main four categories, second-place winners will get $75 and third-place winners will get $50.
People can enter as individuals or a group.
Be ready to deliver your work of art to the Hillsborough County Fairgrounds, corner of State Road 60 and Sydney Washer Road in Brandon, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 9, 10 or 11. You should include an entry form and a photograph of your piece. Winners are to be notified Oct. 18.
Complete contest rules and entry forms should be posted this week at http://hillsborough.extension.ufl.edu. Click on Home Gardening. Questions? Call (813) 744-5519, ext. 146.
