Book Helps You Count Calories, Carbs

»  Comments | Post a Comment

One of the hardest parts of dieting (besides being hungry) is tracking how many calories you're taking in with each meal and snack.

Most people guess - and underestimate by a long shot. Then they wonder why the bulge won't budge.

The "2008 CalorieKing Calorie, Fat and Carbohydrate Counter" (Allan Borushek & Associates Inc./Family Health Publishing, $7.99) lists calories for more than 11,000 foods, including items from 200 fast-food restaurants, international foods and even snacks you'll find at carnivals, movie theaters and in the food court at the local mall. It's all researched by CalorieKing dietitians and includes information about fat and carbohydrates. So if your weight is fine, but you want to cut your cholesterol, it's still a useful guide.

The book is compiled by Allan Borushek, a dietitian and health educator, and has weight-control tips; information on unexplained weight gain; advice for overweight children; and specialized guides on diabetes, glycemic index, calcium, protein, cholesterol, fiber, sodium, iron, caffeine and high blood pressure.

All that, and it's small enough to tote around in your purse or briefcase.
