What's New In Food Media

Here's what's new in food media:

In print: We really should all stop reading so many cooking magazines, but the July issues are hot. The sultry burger on the cover of the new Bon Appetit's BBQ Issue made us open it up. Inside it was ab-fab. Cooking Light also pulled us in with a cherry pie cover, then kept our attention with a technique guide to marinating (because they help keep your kitchen cool; pop it on the grill). Gourmet's cover screamed "Open me!" with the promise of "delicious new ways to use tomatoes," and we obeyed. It paid off, too, in tomato bread pudding and a gorgeous tomato terrine with corn and shiitake mushrooms, tomato granita, green tomato salad with honeydew, cilantro and jalepeno.

We peeped at Martha Stewart Everyday Food, but only because Emeril Lagasse was on the cover. His new column, "Kick it Up!," starts this month, and frankly it's what the tiny tell-us-something-we-don't-already-know mag needed: simple recipes that are still alluring. Bam.

Saveur has a lovely, nostalgic road-trip piece, based on the "Duncan Hines Adventures in Good Eating" guidebook series published from 1936 to 1962.

On TV: Lagasse also has a new television show, "Emeril Green," about cooking green, on the brand new cable channel Planet Green, beginning July 14. Of the Food Network's four new series starting in July, we're most excited about "Food Detectives," in which Ted Allen will investigate the connection between science and our chow. Premieres July 29.

On the Web: Epicurious .com's money-saving tips are simple and so worth your time, unless you have money to burn at the grocery store. Go to epicurious.com, click "Articles & Guides," then "Everyday Cooking," then "How to Stretch Your Food Dollars."
