When I saw the photos of John and Deana Buckley's kitchen renovation (the subject of today's cover story, which starts on Page 12), I oohed and ahhed and lusted with the rest of the Baylife staff.
But the truth of it is, a kitchen like that would be lost on me, a noncook. My little galley kitchen, with its (gasp!) white appliances and (gulp!) Formica countertops is just fine. As long as the microwave works.
I'm an HGTV addict, so I know the value of a fancy eat-in kitchen. Thing is, my family always eats out - out on the lanai, out on the deck, out on the couch. (I'll be here all week; please remember to tip your carrier.)
Actually, I had a lovely eat-in kitchen once, not that long ago. It was gigantic, with an island at the center and lots of counter space. My mother took one look and promptly pronounced it a "terrible waste." I think she was crying just a little.
It wasn't a waste, though. The kitchen was so fabulous that friends who cooked would show up with groceries and beg to make dinner for us. No joke.
The Culinary Sherpas (Page 7) haven't offered to make dinner at my home yet, but they have treated us to some delicious food here at the News Center. An extreme kitchen and foodie friends didn't inspire me to get cooking, but they just might.
For now, though, the garden is where I do my domestic diva thing. Anne Pidgeon's "Dig This" plant picks (Page 19) have definitely inspired me to do a little renovating out in the yard this week.
