Planter' Almanac for January

What To Do This Month

Gardeners, start your seeds. Getting started indoors now will give you a wealth of economical plants for transplanting outdoors in March, when all threat of frost is past.

Now's the time to start your salad - tomato, green pepper and cucumbers, and some sunny annuals, including marigolds, cosmos and sunflowers. Recycle egg cartons to use as seedling trays, or dig out the big plastic tray your annuals came in back in the fall. Sit them in a sunny window. If you're worried about keeping them moist, cover with cellophane wrap.

What To Plant This Week

Annuals: alyssum, bracteantha (strawflower), calendula, California poppy, carnation, delphinium, dianthus, diascia, dusty miller, foxglove, gaillardia, geranium, lobelia, ornamental cabbage or kale, nemesia, osteospermum, pansy, petunia, snapdragon, statice, verbena, viola

Vegetables: beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, Chinese cabbage, collards, endive-escarole, green onions, lettuce, mustard, peas, potatoes, turnips
