Read the labels when buying mineral makeup

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Just a few years ago, mineral makeup wasn't that easy to come by, and it usually sported a big price tag.

These days, mineral makeup - foundation, blush, eye shadow and more - can be found at just about any drugstore or makeup counter. And brand competition has made it quite affordable.

So, what's all the hype about? Women love mineral makeup, especially women with sensitive skin. It's made from crushed minerals such as zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, mica and iron oxides. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are natural sunscreens, so mineral makeups provide the extra "perk" of sun protection.

Most conventional cosmetics contain chemicals, dyes, fragrances, talc and other ingredients that can irritate skin or create a chalky or oily appearance. True mineral makeup without additives can provide excellent natural-looking coverage.

When choosing mineral makeup, it's important to read the labels to ensure there are no sneaky additives. Even natural additives can cause irritation. One ingredient, bismuth oxychloride, also called "synthetic pearl," is used to add shimmer to some products. While it is natural, it also may be irritating to sensitive skin.

Mineral makeup products are very easy to apply, which is another reason they have become so popular. A little buff with a makeup puff and you're out the door.
