Injinji Performance Series Toesock, $12, available at running specialty stores
Toe socks are a logical but funky-looking running gadget - an opportunity for runners weary of toe blisters to separate the tiny digits from one another.
Injinji's Performance Toesock uses the same nylon and Lycra blend found in many of today's running socks and is good at keeping moisture away from the skin. What makes it better, however, is its individual foot and toe design. And there's a right and left sock, which makes each sock fit and stay snug.
It's a pain to get the hang of putting on toe socks, which is why the packaging includes instructions for newbies. And while at first it's awkwardly obvious you're wearing toe socks, that feeling disappears as soon as the running starts.
This sock definitely will appeal to people prone to blisters and cuts between the toes. It will remove the painful rub and the end-of-run surprise that you've got a bloody sock. It's also supposed to promote a more natural foot motion (much like barefoot running) but that's not really the case.
Though the sock looks thin, it works great in cold weather. It remains to be seen whether it's too warm in Florida's more traditional hot and humid climate. I've found this fabric blend - also called Cool Max - works great come summertime, but others familiar with Injinji socks say they're a tad too warm.
After a few washes and long runs, I noticed the fabric looked slightly worn on the big toe. It's best to keep these socks out of the dryer.
