Fresh Wave Pear Pack Sachets
Available at Bed, Bath & Beyond and Village Health Market, Tampa; five for $15.95
The pitch: "A natural odor solution that's safe to use around people and pets."
The skinny: Nothing smells worse than an old gym bag packed with stinky uniforms and sweaty cleats. A fruity potpourri or a can of Lysol is not the remedy. Even when the clothes are clean, there's just a certain stink that permeates.
Fresh Wave specializes in neutralizing odors with natural ingredients, specifically extracts of lime, pine needles, aniseed, clove, soya and cedar wood. They're simply made and safe to leave out, as opposed to scented oils and diffusers.
The ingredients make for a nice combination - not too fresh and definitely not fruity. More importantly, the sachets were true neutralizers and not scent covers for bad odors.
The sachets work well in the car or gym bag. Most impressively, they stripped away the stench of year-old soccer cleats.
But the sachets don't last forever. The instructions say they last almost a month, and that appears to be the case when they're inside a shoe or a gym bag. But the sachet I left in our compact car seemed to lose its effectiveness in about 10 days.
Cost-conscious shoppers may want to weigh this factor; larger spaces will likely need a bigger boost.
