Black flowers work well as Halloween decor

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Q: I'm planning a Halloween party at my home and want to use frightening plants as a decoration. Do you have any scary suggestions?

Answer: Glad you asked. I love frightening plants! The best ones, I think, are those that are dark (and ominous) in color. My suggestions include:

  • Capsicum "Black Pearl," Black Pearl ornamental pepper, zone 10, with black foliage and stems
  • Colocasia escultenta "Black Magic," Black Magic elephant ear, zone 9, a black tropical perennial
  • Ipomoea batatas "Blackie," Blackie ornamental sweet potato, zone 9, a trailing annual vine
  • Solenostemon "Dark Star," Dark Star coleus, zone 10, with black wrinkled leaves
  • Streliztia nicholai , Giant Bird of Paradise, zone 9, with a black bud and white petals
  • Tacca chantrieri , bat flower, zone 10, a black bat-looking flower with white whisker-like tendrils

We have Black Magic elephant ear decorating our pond at the Extension office. I had a bat flower plant once, but it has since decomposed in my landscape. This is definitely a plant I will purchase again, though.

Hope you have a great Halloween!
