A record number of pint-size runners participated today in the annual Too Good for Drugs Jr. Gasparilla Distance Classic.
More than 1,700 children, ages 2 to 10, registered for the races, which featured distances from 30 yards to a mile at the University of Tampa's Pepin Stadium. Last year's event had 1,300 participants.
The Too Good for Drugs Classic is a companion to the annual Gasparilla Distance Classic road races being held Feb. 26 and 27. While those four races feature many elite runners competing for prizes, the child's event is more about participation. Each young runner gets a running bib, T-shirt and a finisher's medal.
