Pet Owners Need Storm Plans

»  Comments | Post a Comment

With the arrival of hurricane season, pet owners are reminded to include their animals in their disaster plans.

Identify - well before a hurricane threatens - friends, relatives or co-workers who would welcome both you and your pet during an evacuation. A host home is the best and most comfortable option. Hillsborough County has two pet-friendly shelters; Pinellas has three. In all of these, pet owners must stay with their animals. In Hillsborough, evacuees are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. In Pinellas, residents must preregister by calling (727) 582-2150.

All shelters require proof that animals are up-to-date on rabies vaccines.

Some animal hospitals also serve as pet shelters. Expect to pay boarding fees.

In addition, some hotels and motels accept pets.
