Downtown Pet Adoption Party Drawing Crowd

Bogo has a face not just a mother could love.

The puppy's face captured Karen Loy when she saw the 10-week-old mix of St. Bernard and shar pei mix online Wednesday.

She came to adopt Bogo today at an adoption event going on until 2 p.m. at Lykes Gaslight Park. The park is at Franklin Street and Kennedy Boulevard in downtown Tampa.

"It was the cute face. I fell in love with him," she said.

Bogo was on his way to a new home with Loy in Hyde Park.

The event is put on by the Humane Society of Tampa Bay and Hillsborough County Animal Services.
Dogs and cats of all ages are available for adoption.

A 3-month-old Rottweiler mix they named Dakota snared the hearts of Jennifer Ludvigsen and Christopher Leavens. Dakota will be their first dog together.

She's expected to become quite a dog. The couple was told Dakota could reach 70 or 80 pounds.

"I'm hoping for a little smaller, but we'll see," Leavens said. "I've had big dogs before."

Though the event encourages adoption, it's also to let people know about the plight of animals in the county, said Dennis McCoullough, acting director of Hillsborough County Animal Services.

"Spaying and neutering are the answer. We can't adopt our way out of this," he said.

The two groups intend to host similar events every quarter. The next will be in April.
