This year's tournament returns Saturday as the teams face off in pool-play action to reach next Friday's tournament final at Brandon.
Last season, East Bay High's boys basketball team experienced a dream season, claiming the program's first winning record in 38 years and reaching the postseason for the first time since 1968.
Graduating seniors were recognized in this last game of the season and it was East Bay elder classman Giovanny Loyez who made the play of the night, pouncing on a fumble at his 1-yard line. The grab stopped a Strawberry Crest drive that could have given the Chargers the lead in the second half.
Running back Cyrus Dooley came up big when Tyrell Garner went down to injury and the duo each rushed for over 100 yards to lead Brandon into the playoffs after defeating East Bay.
Durant took advantage of East Bay's first-quarter miscues to build a 21-0 lead, and used its ground attack in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory.
Despite having leading rusher Dazmond Patterson leave the game in the third quarter with a minor leg injury, Plant City overcame a furious comeback by East Bay and scored the go-ahead touchdown with 1:05 left on the clock.
As Gaither junior Shug Oyegunle stood waiting to return a kick following East Bay’s 16 unanswered, fourth-quarter points, he said his only thought was to a week of practice where the Cowboys' mantra was "must win."
East Bay used a strong rushing attacked and a stingy defense to easily defeat nearby Riverview in a Class 7A-District 8 matchup.
After a slow start in the first quarter that included two turnovers that East Bay converted into scores, it was status quo for Newsome as running backs Keller Powers and Clint Carnell wore down the Indians' defense to give the Wolves their first district win of the season.
With Bloomingdale down by two points and on East Bay's 2-yard line with 43 second left in the game, the football squirted loose and Indians linebacker Demetri Green pounced on it to preserve a victory and hand the Bulls their first loss.
It wasn't pretty, but for Steinbrenner coach Floyd Graham, he wanted a win no matter how ugly it was.
For three years, Demetri Green watched with envy as his friends enjoyed playing under the Friday night lights as members of the East Bay High football team.
East Bay’s new spread option offense and “All In” theme worked to perfection in a win over Lennard.
East Bay High senior Kieran Pettus has been a key role player for the football team in his three previous seasons.
Xavier Johnson ran for 168 yards before sitting down with a wrist injury and Chamberlain’s defense held East Bay to minus-5 yards in the first half as Chamberlain won the Kickoff Classic.
East Bay High volleyball coach Katrina Toth has resigned, athletic director Scot Tipton announced.
Lennard's offense was pretty much unstoppable in its 13-6 first-half jamboree victory over Riverview, while just about the only thing that stopped Spoto in its 12-10 second-half victory over East Bay was Spoto.
Hillsborough County baseball coaches met Tuesday night at Jefferson High School to compile the All-Western Conference Baseball Team.
Tom Lota, one-time wrestling coach at East Bay High School, refuses to give in to the disease.
East Bay High quarterback Stephanie Williams doesn't get nervous anymore before her flag football games, which is a huge change for her.
Three flag football teams from Hillsborough County - Alonso, East Bay and Plant - traveled last week to Tallahassee for the Capital City tournament against some of the state's best teams, and after the last flag was pulled, county teams looked darned strong.
A Most Valuable Player award isn't something that's officially named at the annual Palm Harbor University Lady Canes Spring Tournament, but it would be hard for anyone to look past East Lake's Alyssa Bache with a straight face.
With three of the state's top ranked teams by classification taking part, the first round of the annual Palm Harbor University Lady Canes Spring Tournament got underway Friday night at a jam-packed Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex in Clearwater.
Durant cranked out 10 hits in a 9-4 victory against host Bloomingdale in the Saladino Baseball Tournament.
