TAMPA - Tracey Alderman's older brother, Steve, says the arrest and shooting of his brother has devastated the family, who learned about it from watching television news.

Tracey Alderman, 29, who was released from jail about a week ago, "had a second chance and he blew it," Steve Alderman said, who added that his brother has a troubled personal history. His father died in 1991 and his mother was schizophrenic, Steve Alderman said, and his brother was in an out of foster homes growing up.

Tracey Alderman was on a number of medications, which may have contributed to his actions, his brother said.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office is investigating the shooting of Tracey Alderman at its District 2 office at 2310 N. Falkenburg Road.

Alderman was shot by a deputy after trying to wrestle a handgun away from the officer, according to Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokesman J.D. Callaway.

Alderman does not have life-threatening injuries, Callaway said.

About 7:30 p.m., Alderman was being questioned and asked to use the bathroom, Callaway said. As a deputy accompanied him to the restroom, Alderman attempted to wrestle the deputy's gun away. The deputy shot him in the thigh.

Alderman was at District 2 for questioning after being arrested in connection with a kidnapping and attempted robbery in Seffner.

Police think Alderman carjacked a woman outside a Sweetbay supermarket and tried to force her to retrieve money from a Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union drive-through about 5 p.m. Wednesday.

After the woman was unable to withdraw money, her attacker slid a note stating he was robbing the bank.

The woman - who is yet to be identified - eventually escaped and the man drove off.

Deputies pulled Alderman over at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and South Kingsway Road and arrested him.
