A 72-year-old woman was killed late Thursday when she was struck by a car as she walked across Bloomingdale Avenue, deputies said.
Julia Jacobsen, who lived at The Bridges, an adult assisted living facility in Riverview, was struck by a 2008 Toyota at 10:47 p.m. just east of Patterson Road near her home, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.
Alcohol was not involved, and deputies said charges are not expected against the driver, Joseph Stevens, 21, of 3038 Ridgevail Circle in Valrico.
Stevens was driving eastbound on Bloomingdale when Jacobsen walked into his path, deputies said. She died at the scene, deputies said.
How Jacobsen came to be on the street at that time was unclear. Jack Goodwyn, vice president of marketing and public relations, would not answer questions about that at a news conference this afternoon.
Goodwyn sent condolences to friends and relatives of Jacobsen and said residents of The Bridges are in a safe environment.
The facility opened in October and houses 30 residents, he said. It has the capacity for 101.
