Citing the downturn in the economy, Hillsborough County Water Resource officials announced today that its South Shore customer service center will close July 2.
The office is inside the county's South Shore Regional Service Center, 410 30th St. S.E., Ruskin. The four employees at the office will be reassigned to other posts in the water resource department.
The department's other customer service centers in Brandon and northwest Hillsborough County will remain open.
The Brandon office is at the Brandon Crossings shopping center at State Road 60 and Falkenburg Road; the Northdale office is at 15610 Premiere Drive. Both centers are open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The closing of the South Shore office is one of several steps the water resource services department is taking to trim costs, officials say. The department is seeing a decrease in revenues, and although the number of customers has remained about the same as last year, less water is being bought, officials said.
Foreclosures and an increase in the number of people who default on their bills are also affecting the department.
