TAMPA - Workers are fixing incorrect road stripes applied after repaving work that were confusing drivers at Kennedy Boulevard and Ashley Drive.
Fixing the problem will close one lane of westbound Kennedy at the intersection until about midafternoon, said Kris Carson, Department of Transportation spokeswoman.
The agency learned this morning that the incorrect striping was confusing drivers heading west through the intersection. The repaving work was done Monday night, and the stripes were added after a layer of new asphalt was applied.
Some motorists believed the striping directed them to the inside lane of Kennedy just west of Ashley.
The intersection where westbound Kennedy shrinks from four lanes to two has one lane for left turns only and another for right turns only. The confusion appeared in the two lanes continuing west.
Some drivers going through the intersection in what becomes the outside lane of Kennedy believe they are being directed to the road's inside lane, which also has westbound traffic, essentially shrinking the road from two lanes to one.
Once one driver made the lane change, others followed in a domino effect.
The work was part of a resurfacing project along Kennedy from the Hillsborough River bridge to the Channel District that started in April.
