TAMPA - An early-morning fire at the Port of Tampa caused about $2 million in damage, according to a preliminary estimate from fire officials.

Investigators are looking into the cause of the blaze, which started about 1 a.m. near the boiler room at Amalie Oil Co., 1601 McCloskey Blvd.

The company stores large amounts of oils typically used in cars and trucks. Motor oil, coolant, brake fluid and similar liquids are kept in tanks that hold 1,500 to 1.2 million gallons, Tampa Fire Rescue Capt. Bill Wade said.

The blaze, which took about 50 firefighters to bring under control, damaged the facility's boiler, Wade said. In addition, several thousand gallons of product in nearby storage tanks were damaged by heat and must be disposed of, he said.

About 30 people were working at the facility when the fire started. All escaped safely, Wade said.
