LAKELAND - A police officer fired several shots at a van whose driver tried to mow him down today after the officer threw down stop sticks, Lakeland police spokesman Jack Gillen said.

At 1:15 p.m., Officer David Cook was setting stop sticks at Harden Boulevard and Frontage Road when Kevin Applegate, 44, avoided the stop sticks and aimed the van at Cook, police said.

Cook shot numerous rounds at the van, missing the driver, who continued into Lakeside Village.

Applegate ran from the vehicle. He was caught by K-9 Officer Ted Sealey and his partner, Bodo.

Applegate wasn't shot but was bitten by the dog, police said. He was treated for dog bite wounds at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Charges are pending.

The incident started when Sealey attempted a traffic stop at Harden Boulevard and Beacon Road.
