Crews have turned off the flow of natural gas to a broken pipeline at the northwest corner of Gandy Boulevard and Manhattan Avenue, according to Tampa Fire Rescue.

Workers with Southwest Signal, a subcontractor involved in construction on Gandy Boulevard, apparently struck the 2-inch line with an auger at about 2:35 p.m. today.

Tampa Fire Rescue workers blocked the intersection and asked nearby businesses to close from about 2:45 to 3:45. Within the hour, TECO People's Gas shut off the gas, and the area returned to normal.

A hazardous materials team monitored the amoung of flammable gas in the area. No injuries were reported.
