A Tampa police officer was stabbed in the neck Saturday night at North Oregon Avenue and West Chestnut Street, police say.
When backup officers arrived on scene, they found officer Ryan Culbertson bleeding from the neck. He was dazed and had trouble recalling the incident. He was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital with non life-threatening injures. He's expected to recover.
Culbertson, in his first year on the force, suffered a broken jaw and also required 10 stitches to treat a laceration to his neck. He was released from the hospital and is recovering from his injuries at his home, according to a press release from the Tampa Police Department.
According to Andrea Davis, a police spokeswoman, the officer was responding to a disturbance call in North Boulevard Homes. After he left the call, he saw a large group of people at the intersection of Oregon Avenue and Chesnut Street. After calling for backup, the officer tried to arrest one person. He got one handcuff on the suspect when someone attacked him from behind , Davis said.
"The person stabbed him in the neck with some type of sharp object," Davis said.
Another officer arrived on the scene and found the officer groggy and bleeding from the neck.
Culbertson had trouble recalling the incident.
Police are looking for two men, one with handcuffs on one wrist.
