The giant Confederate flag at Interstates 4 and 75 will be replaced with a larger version.

The Confederate battle flag hoisted at what is planned to be a memorial park for Confederate soldiers was raised amid controversy by a local chapter of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

The original flag measures 30 feet by 50 feet, or 1,500 square feet. The new flag is 30 feet by 60 feet, or 1,800 square feet.

The new flag will be raised at 4 p.m. today, said Marion Lambert, a spokesman for the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

The old flag will be cut into pieces and sold to raise money for the memorial park.
Lambert said except for granite work and pavers in a courtyard, construction at the 1.9-acre memorial park should be finished in about six weeks.

The flag was initially raised June 3 at the I-75 bridge over U.S. 92.
