St. Petersburg Fire Rescue is investigating two vehicle fires that happened about 3:40 a.m. at 250 72nd Avenue North.
Authorities said a woman called them to report the blazes. Firefighters found a Dodge van and a Chrysler Sebring burning out of control with flames leaping towards a nearby home. The garage door was damaged, but firefighters were able to extinguish the flames before they reached the main part of the house.
The homeowners, Joseph and JoAnn Constanzo, were asleep when the fires began. Neighbors heard a car horn, saw the fire and woke up the couple, Deputy Fire Marshal Lt. Joel Granata said.
JoAnn Constanzo complained of chest pains and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center as a precaution. She was treated and released, Granata said. No other injuries were reported.
Investigators are checking to see whether the vehicle fires are related to a dumpster fire they found about the same time just one mile away, at Third Street and 72nd Avenue North. Authorities have not released information on possible suspects.
