Two local Red Cross volunteers are on their way to Texas to help with Hurricane Ike relief efforts.
Lynn Skyrms and Kel Bartley just returned from Florida's east coast, where they had been assisting victims of Hurricane Fay. They left again this morning in a Red Cross Emergency Response Vehicle to deliver hot meals, water and cleaning supplies to neighborhoods devastated by Ike.
The pair will join four other local volunteers, plus more than 200 mobile feeding trucks. Skyrms and Bartley committed to a three-week assignment in the hardest hit areas.
The American Red Cross says it costs about $2,500 to deploy each truck. The organization announced today it has teamed with Publix Super Markets to collect more donations. Customers can add a contribution of any amount to their grocery bills when they check out.
The Red Cross hopes to raise $100 million for this year's hurricane victims. To make a donation, go to www.redcross.org.
