The city of St. Petersburg, Progress Energy and local research firms want to tap the federal stimulus package to establish an energy consortium with the Research Triangle Institute, a nonprofit research organization.
The consortium would focus on the development of renewable energy technologies that could be incorporated into the electrical grid.
Last month, St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Baker and officials with Progress Energy, SRI International and Draper Laboratory discussed the use of federal stimulus dollars with Mike Sole, secretary of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.
Baker noted in a press release that both President Obama and Gov. Charlie Crist have said stimulus money should be used for alternate and clean energy development.
"This proposed consortium addresses that objective," Baker said, "creates high paying research and development jobs in the process, and works to reduce our emission of green house gases."
